The fear of being alone.

Recently, I had the privilege of guiding a retreat in the Ranft, a beautiful place offering peace and space for self-discovery. It was a weekend of deep reflection, but also filled with unexpected encounters that made me think.

The confused flock of sheep

While taking a walk, we came across a small flock of sheep. They were huddled together in a tiny pen, even though the farmer was in the process of building a larger, open space for them. As we approached, the sheep grew nervous. They pressed against each other, seeking comfort – even the big ones hid behind the smaller ones.

The weight of the flock pushed so hard against the gate that it finally gave way, and the sheep scattered in panic. This scene reminded me of us humans: out of fear, we often cling to one another, even when freedom is right in front of us.

The brave white cat

A few minutes later, on an open field, we spotted a small, fluffy white cat walking toward us. She was alone, but radiated so much grace and self-assurance. From a distance, she began purring and "talking" to us as if greeting us joyfully. Without hesitation, she walked right up to us, allowed us to pet her, and followed us for a while.

This little cat was the complete opposite of the fearful flock of sheep. She trusted herself and her surroundings. Her courage to be alone in such an open space made her special and unforgettable. It was as if she wanted to show us that with trust and bravery, we can experience something extraordinary – encounters that we might otherwise miss.

Two ways to face life

These two experiences, both occurring on the same day, deeply moved me. They remind us that we have two choices in how we approach life: we can, like the sheep, huddle together out of fear, or we can, like the little cat, courageously walk our own path – regardless of being alone.

Perhaps this is the magic of life: when we find the courage to break free from the herd and listen to our hearts, something truly special happens. Doors open, we meet new people, and life reveals its most beautiful form.

What do you think? Are you ready to walk your own path – to dare, like the cat, to explore the world with curiosity and trust?

Courage is often the first step toward something great, something unpredictable. Sometimes, all it takes is to step onto your own path with a smile, and life responds with a gift you never expected.
